The Jeep Wrangler (JL) is the fourth generation of the Jeep Wrangler sport utility vehicle. Unveiled at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 29th, 2017. Production of the all-new vehicle began in November, 2017, and it will be available for sale starting in January, 2018, with production of the current-generation Jeep Wrangler (JK) overlapping until at least mid-2018. The first photos of the new generation were made public in early November and show both the 2-door Wrangler and the 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. The photo of the former confirms that the new vehicle will include the ability to remove the side doors and roof, and fold down the windshield.

Design
The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited were unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017. Featuring a new yet familiar design, the all-new fourth-generation Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited feature an exterior design that is reminiscent of the 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ), with a "raked" front grille and round headlamps that integrate into the front grille.
The all-new Jeep Wrangler will be available in Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon trim levels, with all being available in either two-door (Wrangler) or four-door (Wrangler Unlimited) body styles, except for the Sahara, which is available on Wrangler Unlimited only (the two-door Wrangler Sahara has been discontinued for 2018). The front windshield can still be folded down, or completely removed, and is made of aluminum, as are some of the body panels (some body panels are still made of steel), as well as the hard roof, to make it easier to remove. The doors are made of aluminum, making them easier to take off. LED front headlamps and rear tail lamps are available, as are Daytime Running Lamps (DRL's) on the front fenders, which are also reminiscent of the 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ). Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on all but Sahara(either styled steel or aluminum-alloy), and eighteen-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are are on the Sahara.
On the interior, buyers can now choose between three updated infotainment systems (U Connect 3 5.0BT, U Connect 4 7.0, and U Connect 4C 8.4N). Each model will feature its own distinct interior design. For example, the Rubicon offers a color-keyed dashboard panel, while the Sahara, when equipped with leather-trimmed seats, features a stitched vinyl dashboard panel reminiscent to that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2). Both cloth and leather-trimmed seating surfaces are available on Rubicon and Sahara. The interior design was inspired by the 1954-1983 Jeep CJ-5 and 1987-1995 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) models. Rear passengers now get a 115V AC household-style power outlet, as well as rear USB charging ports on Wrangler Unlimited models. The power window controls remain in the center of the instrument panel, and the front speakers remain in the lower corners of the instrument panel. There is a new three-spoke, retro-inspired steering wheel, and a color instrument cluster display screen is available on upper-level trims. Keyless Enter-'n'-Go, Chrysler's keyless entry and start system, is standard equipment on all Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models. Touch sensors located on all door handles for Rubicon and Sahara equipped with Remote Proximity Keyless Entry option. In addition, a dual-zone, automatic climate control system is available(Standard Rubicon and Sahara optional Sport S with Technology Group), and single-zone, manual air conditioning still remains optional on base model 2 door models(A/C Standard on 4 door).
All roof systems are new for 2018. The standard soft top is now available in colors other than black, and can now be manually-retracted and folded back from the interior of the vehicle (the Velcro and zipper system has been deleted). In addition, the "Freedom Top" hardtop option remains available in black or body color, and still features a three-panel system with two removable front panels for an "open-air" driving experience without having to remove the entire hardtop from the Jeep. The hardtop is now constructed of aluminum, making it easier to lift and remove. Finally, an all-new power-retractable soft top will be available starting in early 2018, and is the first of its kind.
Roof options
The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited JL will offer three distinct roof options, all of which are all-new :
- The Sun Rider Soft Top is a soft canvas roof, and is the standard roof option on all Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models. This roof has been fully redesigned, and is now easier to remove. The rear and side windows easily lift out, and the previous Velcro and zipper enclosures have been deleted. Once the rear and side windows have been removed (they can be stowed inside of the vehicle behind the rear seats), the driver is able to unlatch the roof latches, and drop the roof back, where it will stow behind the rear seats (a similar system to that of many soft top roadsters, such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata). There is a lever that allows the driver to "lock" the roof in place in the "down" position so the roof will not "flap" when the vehicle is in motion. In addition, the Sun Rider Soft Top is now available in either Black or Tan, whereas it was only available in Black on the Jeep Wrangler (JK).
- The Freedom Hard Top is a color-keyed, hard metal roof. Like its predecessor, the Freedom Hard Top is a three-piece system, with two removable roof panels in the front of the vehicle, allowing the driver to remove the panels for an "open-air" driving experience without having to remove the entire roof. However, the new roof has been redesigned to allow the driver to easily lift and remove the roof, as it is now made of aluminum, and therefore reduces the weight of the vehicle.
- The Freedom Roof System is a soft canvas panel that is power-retractable, and is the first of its kind on any Jeep Wrangler. The driver simply presses a switch located inside of the vehicle, and the roof folds back, allowing for an easy "open-air" driving experience. The system is similar to that of the 2008-2012 Jeep Liberty (KK), which offered a similar option. The roof can be operated at up to 60 MPH, or 96.5 kmh.
The interior roll bar has also been redesigned to accommodate the new roof systems. The front windshield now easily folds down (and can also easily be removed), and takes less time to fold and remove than the Jeep Wrangler (JK)'s windshield. A tool kit is included so that the driver always has the required tools on-hand to fold or remove his or her windshield.
Powertrain
The 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 gasoline engine still remains available from the existing Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, and is standard on all models, though has been redesigned for improved fuel economy. The engine features an all-new, Aisin D478 six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, with an optional 850RE Torqueflite eight-speed automatic transmission being optional. The engine performance is unchanged from the previous model at 285 hp (213 kW; 289 PS) and 260 lb?ft (353 N?m). This is only offered in North America
However, an all-new, 2.0L Turbocharged Four-Cylinder (Inline-4) gasoline engine is available on all Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models. Paired exclusively with the 850RE Torqueflite eight-speed automatic transmission, the new engine features a mild hybrid system branded as eTorque for improved fuel economy and off-road performance, and produces 270 hp (201 kW; 274 PS) and 295 lb?ft (400 N?m) combined. This is the only gasoline engine offered in Europe Transmission choices are either an all-new six-speed manual transmission, or the optional Torqueflite 850RE eight-speed automatic transmission, which made its debut in the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2), replacing the older Torqueflite 845RE unit. The eight-speed automatic unit will feature a traditional shifter.
Jeep has also announced that a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 turbodiesel engine will become available on the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited in Europe beginning in 2019. it will produce approximately 260 hp (194 kW; 264 PS) and 442 lb?ft (599 N?m). This is for the North American market. The rest of the world will get a 2.2l 4 cylinder turbo diesel.
All Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models are exclusively Four Wheel Drive. There will not be a two wheel drive model for right now. but it is possible in the future. There will be three systems available, each with a manual shift lever. The Rubicon will also feature an electronic locking differential, which allows the driver to lock either the rear differential only or both the front and rear differentials via a toggle switch located in the center of the instrument panel.

Models
The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL will be available in four distinct trim levels: the base Sport, the mid-level Sport "S", the luxurious Sahara (Wrangler Unlimited ONLY), and the off-road-ready Rubicon. Jeep has released a list of standard and optional equipment for each trim level.
The Sport will serve as the base model. It will include the following standard equipment: 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 gasoline V6 engine, six-speed manual transmission, 3.45:1 axle ratio, Dana 35/30 front and rear axles (respectively), trailer sway control, Command-Trac NV241 transfer case, full metal doors with roll-up windows, body-color front grille, halogen headlamps, fog lamps, mold-in-color non-power folding side mirrors, fuel tank and transfer case skid plates, 245/75R17 Black Sidewall (BSW) tires, Sunrider folding soft top, front and rear tow hooks, seventeen-inch full-face black-painted steel wheels, rear floor heat ducts, cabin air filter, full locking center floor console, front floor mats, LED interior lighting, push-button start, cloth seats, manual front seats, driver lumbar support, Fold-and-Tumble and removable rear bench seat, vinyl steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, steering wheel-mounted Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) controls, cruise control, "Wash-Out" interior with removable floor plugs, eight speakers, U Connect 3 5.0 radio with media hub, rear console-mounted power outlet, 12V power outlets, front center console USB port, advanced airbags (front and front and rear side SRS), side front seat-mounted SRS airbags, front seatbelt reminder system, LATCH child seat anchor system, rear backup camera system, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Sentry-Key system, Antilock Braking System (ABS), electronic roll mitigation, electronic stability and traction controls, and hill-start assist.
The Sport "S" adds convenience features to the base Sport trim, such as: deep-tinted sunscreen windows, power windows, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, manual single-zone air conditioning, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and remote keyless entry with mechanical flip-key.
The Sahara, available on Unlimited only, is the most luxurious trim level of the Wrangler, and adds luxury features to the Sport "S" trim, such as: body-color grille with Sahara accent throats, power-adjustable and heated side mirrors, 255/70R18 Black Sidewall (BSW) tires, eighteen-inch (18") aluminum-alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone electronic climate control system, the U Connect 4 7.0 infotainment system, and 115V AC auxiliary power outlet.
The off-road-ready Rubicon is the top-of-the-line Wrangler trim level, and adds the following features to the Sahara trim: 4.10:1 axle ratio, Dana 44 (M210 wide and M220 wide with electric diff. lockers) heavy-duty front and rear axles, Rock-Trac NV241 transfer case, Electronic Anti-sway bar disconnect, body-color grille with Rubicon accent throats, 285/70/17 Black Sidewall (BSW) BF Goodrich KO2 all-terrain tires, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio).
All models will feature the revised 285-horsepower 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 gasoline engine and an all-new six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, though the all-new 260-horsepower 2.0L "Hurricane" Turbocharged Inline Four-Cylinder (I4) gasoline engine with a mild hybrid System and an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission will be available as well. A 3.0L EcoDiesel Turbocharged V6 diesel engine, built by VM Motori and the same engine available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) and the Ram 1500, will become available in 2019. The all-new eight-speed 850RE automatic transmission, which first debuted on the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2), will be optional with the gasoline V6 engine, and standard with the turbocharged gasoline Inline Four-Cylinder (I4) engine. As with previous Jeep Wranglers, all Jeep Wrangler JL models will be equipped with standard Four Wheel Drive, with a choice of three transfer cases, depending on the trim level chosen. Jeep has also announced that a plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler JL will be released in 2020, though details about this version are currently unknown.
Options available on all Wrangler JL models include a Anti-Spin rear differential(includes upgrade to Dana 44 M220 axle), four auxiliary equipment switches, an Alpine premium audio system(not avail. Sport), the "Freedom Top" three-piece hardtop, and an eight-speed 850RE TorqueFlite Automatic Transmission.
Pricing
On December 13th, 2017, Jeep unveiled pricing for the all-new 2018 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited JL. On sale in January, 2018, base pricing for each trim level (without options) is as follows :
- Wrangler Sport 2-Door: $26,995 (Up $3,000 from 2017 JK)
- Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4-Door: $30,495 (Up $2,600 from 2017 JK)
- Wrangler Sport "S" 2-Door: $30,195 (Up $3,200 from 2017)

Truck
Jeep executives have stated that the release of the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL will be followed by an all-new, mid-size pickup truck in 2019. The new truck will be Jeep's first since the discontinuation of the Jeep Cherokee (XJ)-based Jeep Comanche in 1992. While aftermarket pickup conversions of the previous-generation Jeep Wrangler (JK), such as those by American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) are currently available for purchase and have been since the JK-based Jeep J8 was introduced, the all-new Wrangler-based pickup will be produced by Jeep at its Toledo Complex in Toledo, Ohio. Jeep is planning to name their Wrangler JL-based pickup truck the Jeep Scrambler, as a tribute to the 1981-1985 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler. The new model is expected to feature a removable roof.
Production
As with its predecessors, the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited JL will be produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex in Toledo, Ohio, and will also be produced alongside its predecessor, the Jeep Wrangler (JK), which will remain in production until at least mid-2018. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JK) is virtually unchanged from the 2017 model, and a WRANGLER JK decal on the front fenders distinguishes the outgoing model from its successor.
